Celebrating the Birth of Lord Krishna

Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, one of the most beloved and revered figures in Indian tradition. Krishna was born at midnight in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva, at a time when the kingdom was ruled by Kansa, whose cruelty had brought fear to the people.

It is believed that Krishna’s birth was foretold as the end of Kansa’s tyranny. When he was born, a divine turn of events made it possible for Vasudeva to take the newborn Krishna out of the prison and carry him safely to Gokul. Despite the storm and the overflowing Yamuna, Vasudeva reached Gokul and entrusted Krishna to Nanda and Yashoda, where he grew up surrounded by love and affection.

Krishna’s childhood in Gokul, filled with innocence, mischief and joy, is remembered through countless traditions and celebrations. Dahi Handi, in particular, recalls his playful love for butter and the joyful spirit of his childhood.

Today, Janmashtami is celebrated with prayers, bhajans, temple decorations and midnight festivities. More than a celebration of his birth, it is a reminder of Krishna’s enduring message of courage, compassion, righteousness and faith.
