A merry IP Christmas

Holiday season is around the corner and we at Biswajit Sarkar Advocates – IP Attorney always try to celebrate the festivities with intellectual stimulation. In this blog, we have cumulated some great innovations of unclear inventions and questionable application.

1. Automatic fire extinguishing system for an existing Christmas tree (US patent 7,963,343).

The invention contains an air pressurized reservoir for fire-retardant agent and a mechanism for automatically discharging. 

2. Naughty or Nice Metre  (US patent 2008/0299533)

It is just a grading scale that helps one determine how naughty or nice the kid is based on the answers to a series of 12 questions. It also has a calculator.

3. Tinsel Gun (US patent 3,494,235 )

This invention is used for dispensing tinsel and the like adaptable for decorating Christmas trees by pressing the trigger of the gun. Let’s fire some tinsels this Christmas!

4. Santa in a Tub (US patent number 372,207)

This invention was registered in the year 1996 and has now expired however, we are amused and fascinated by it. The Applicant has filed the claim on the ornamental design of a Santa Claus figure in a tub brushing its beard.

5. The Santa Clause Detector (US patent 5,523,741)

It is a device of a stocking containing a detector that lights up when a cord is pulled which acts as a signal for the arrival of Santa Clause. Just in case you need to know if Santa is real.

6. Christmas Tree Shaped Pasta (USD352811S)

This invention is a pasta in a shape of a Christmas tree. Yes, that’s it.

7. Christmas Tree Shaped Tea bag (USD374968S)

Is it even Christmas without using your Christmas tree shaped tea bag post having Christmas tree shaped pasta?

8. Santa Clause visit Kit (US7258592B2)

This kit is designed to provide parents with aid in the illusion of a visit from Santa. It includes a device to make boot prints. Since parent’s haven’t been doing this it also directs parents to place a snack within the region with the child and then remove at least a portion of the snack after the child has gone to bed.

9. Snowball gun (US2607333A)

This invention is described as a toy gun for projecting snow/pellets turning loose snow into snow pellets.

10. Condom Advent Calendar (UK patent application 2 328 762)

Advent calendar is a special calendar used to count the days of Advent in anticipation of Christmas. This application claims that it “fills in a gap in the market, for adults around Christmas” and “promotes safe sex, portraying it in a fun way”, however, it never made it to a patent.

We are fascinated by the world of inventions that people see fit not only to create, but that they think are worth patenting. Although most of these patents are pretty old, we found them amusing. Please let us know your views on these inventions.
